Description

The Dry Sea....one hell of a place to start a war. This week will be my fouth year out here, I'm hardly ever out of this suit, it's practically become a part of my body. Although I can't complain, this thing keeps me alive, it hydrates my body and filters the air to make it breatheable. The air here is so hot that one breath will burn your lungs to nothing in a few minutes.
The only time we get to take these off is at night when the air is cool enough to breathe, hopefully I'll be stationed to another planet soon as there's not even a remote chance of going home with the way things are...

Very nice painting, I thought it was 3D from the thumbnail... Good shading, nice textures! Nice composition and colours :) The only thing that bothers me a little is the hand : it looks as if the bones were too long and there were no flesh on the top of the hand....

This one is my entry for a head to head contest with http://whiteshadow.gfxartist.com/ I havn't recived word from him yet so I assume he hasn't completed his one. The theme was a futuristic soldier so I came up with this desert style scout, his breathing aparatus is designed to keep the air he breathes at safe temparatures. Also the suit is fitted with temparature control and hydration filters which uses on board water to gradually rehydrate his body. The outer layer is highly heat reflective so basically this guy is used for reconersance missions which is why you see various communication devices onboard. The fins on the right side of his helmet is for satilite control for photo's, the unit on the left side of his helmet is for off world contact, drop ships ect and he also has a radio for on world contact of his squad leaders. The gun he uses is a light weight M5 221a decendant of the M16 which is only used for self defense, never open attack due to it's limited firepower and the scout does not carry much ammo to keep his weight down. Hope you like it. Please feel free to check http://juro.gfxartist.com/blog for details on how I created this. No referance was used apart from the rifle.

I like the angle and the colour tones. The soldier is cool too. I think his gun should be a littel darker as I gather the its sort of facing down away from the sun. Good clouds and sky.

Your best yet in my opinion. I wonder if Brett sympathises with this man?

I actually saw this in your blog, not realizing you posted it. :p Thanks for the little peak into your creative world.

The only real thing that stands out to me are the clouds and sky as they lack the any color/tonal variation that is so well done in the figure. 'White' clouds and 'Blue' sky seems so....typical. The texturing on the figure is great, and the overall design gives me a Half LIfe 2 vibe. ;) I would say to crisp up the inorganic parts (armor/weapon) but you seem to be consistant in your approach so I'll write it off as an artistic choice.

Just a little FYI, the desert sky...at least what I've seen in Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq is not always so blue...sometimes it's a harsh light yellow/gray, I guess a result of the dust in the air refracting light or some other science crap I have no idea how to explain.

Avatar Wysiwyg

 07/02/05 @011

Thanks for thinking of me Andy!!!

Well I think that the armor...as long as it's cooling systems work, would be cool to have. :p

Oh, and it has to make snowcones too.

interesting character design, the clouds need a bit more work though, they seem almost cut out/pixalated. nice texture on the character

This guy has a serious attitude problem Glenn :p Great to see you back 'n back on form!

Very nice piece of concept work. This looks just like the gear m'friend! Very, very kewl indeed. The 3D effect is impressive, as is your overall palette. Good strong definition in the whole presentation.

Well done m'friend! Tops from me....

Juro I think some of those clouds are pretty sharp at the edges... but still its cool
your *man/robot/military man I don't know what to call it* you painted is pretty cool
you should experiment with textures on the metal and more shadows here and there...
unless the sun is shinning directly on him... I guess it would be lighter
its very nice work... very cool
you did very well
also if this is a H2H that info should be under your description. but I guess as a comment its cool
PS juro cool blog love tuts!
and whiteshadow needs to get down with it and get busy!
let me know when he posts

I do like your entry, the coloring and the placment is awesome...my only prob' are the aireals(?) over the right eye...are the ON the eye or behinf...the shadow really doesnt seem to place where they are at...
well neways good luck! ( let me know where to post my vote?!)

:) Good perspective on the main character
:) Convincing textures on the guy's suit
:) Quite well designed
:( His hand - the knuckles start too far back and his fingers are too short. The positioning is OK, though.
:( The overall colour scheme is blue, which tends to be a calm, cool colour. This image would be much better suited (pardon the pun) by shades of orange, to illustrate the desert environment, heat and discomfort. Instead of having summer clouds you should (IMO) have had a dust storm blowing diagonally across the scene and a seriously bright sun lancing through a gap in the dust clouds at the top.
:( Aside from the above, the clouds would need work anyway. Clouds with edges as ragged as that would be thinned out and wispy at their edges, and therefore more transparent. The internals of these clouds look a bit solid, too. All I can suggest is to study lots of photos of clouds!

Hey this is great work Juro! I like those strong shadows and wish there were more for more depth. :) I like the design -very cool.

But as BaronImpossible says, the clouds caught my attention as the edges are too crispy. :) Well done work!

I presume this is a new one? Great job Juro. The lighting is good, the perspective works and the texture and colors are really nice. It's a good thing you didn't use heavy shading, it adds to the atmospheric effect.
On the other hand, the hard edges on the clouds block that same effect. Do maybe you should soften them. Actually, all the crits that are worth mentioning have allready been mentioned.
All in all: Good job, mr wet pantstain.

Godd job buddy, your showing big improvements.I like the lighting,it's very well done as well as the design.

I do think the edges of the clouds could be softened a little.Maybe you could also change the texture of the gun, since it looks a little too similar to everything else, just to change it up a little. The final thing would be to have his wrist come down more straight with a little more width.Keep plowin ahead man.^__^

its very cool- the painnting is great, the amgle is really good aswell and the clouds adds a lot to the atmosphere.
only thing that maks the paintnig less atractive (and it is verrrry atractive) is the m16, it lokos a bit like a toy.. you should give metal texture to it.. some scratches maybe... scratched paint.... itll look awsom :)

Nice one, I have to agree with previous comments on the cloud, another thing that comes to mind is the shadows from the knife looking things on the helmet, they seem to fall on a flat surface while the helm sems curved, maybe make them grow or shrink in the middle so they define some curves :]

nice modelling.
and a very nice discription! enjoyed the reading...
guess it's been said about a hundret times within the last 47 posts
but i think the clouds dont work.
they are very far in the bg so they have to blurred...
and maybe another arrangement of them would improve the composition.
but "cool" ;) mood plus a cool story!
and it's always nice to see how artists work...
