Description

I did this one to celebrate the upcoming movie: Narnia, one of my favorite storys as a kid. This time I thought I'd try something else I never do, landscapes. It was great fun just to let my brush run free, as always what you think is always adheared to. I realise this is a bullseye composition, but I wanted Aslan to be the focal point.

woooooooooooooooooooo....I like this alot

First, it's a bit different from you...not too many people attempt landscapes cause they are too busy deciding the length of point of ears. :p

Something about that ledge is irking me...it just seems flat...despite all the effort you put into it....maybe it's just me.

Other than maybe making the animal lay down (like it's just chilling in the awe of view) I really don't know what to tell you to make it better....(thumbup)

Nice work man. The perspective of the river isn't all that, and I miss some sparkle in the colors, but those are very subjective crits.

:) Nice rough foliage effect
:) Good contrast between the lion and the background
:) Like the sunlight on the hills
:( I think Aslan should be closer to the camera, not to mention bigger and more regal - he looks a bit gaunt. I would prefer him sitting too. I always prefer my lions sitting and well-fed, especially when they're close up.
:( The perspective on the river is a bit shallow, and it could do with having a few more reflections. It would improve composition by having it wider and more meandering
:( The sky needs cheering up, it's too bright and bland

Its one my all time fave books too..well the chronicles are anyway.

I think you have done a really good lanscape here. The colours are just right in my opinion and can only do with a little added 'sparkle' here and there as stated above by the Dutch master. Aslan looks good too and its a shame we dont have something with him to judge his size by...but maybe that would just spoil it. I also agree its a different approach from you but it still has your style within it. Good work Glenn boy!

I agree with Wysiwyg about the flatness of the rock, but other than that this is a really wonderful painting!
Beautiful atmosphere you have created. Great work!

Hey beautiful! Nice to see you do landscapes that's something new. ;)
My only crit is that he seem so accidental or randomly placed. I know you wanted Aslan to be the focal point, but I don't think the centered composition work to well IMO. Aslan seem to be viewing the landscape before him, and if you just pushed him a little more to the right with more room for the landscape it would improve the impression of the painting.

You've improved your brush work amazingly here! Glad to see. :)

Sorry I'm late Glen, first off I think you've done a really nice job! My only issue is with Aslan, but that's not saying there's anything wrong with him. I think he needs to be closer to the viewer or above the horizon a bit more to give him a more proud kingly look. :) +8

Very good work with the landscape Glenn. I think I'd have Asian a bit more prominent in the overall scale of the scene. I also find the look of an outline on his underside a bit unreal. Overall, a very good painting. Keep up your experimenting with the different subjects you are doing lately.

you know its not very often you see someone attempting landspaces. this is one of the hardest things to pull off - the animal on the ledge of a cliff or a mountain looking over its domain.

i somehow feel that this wasnt planned properly before you attempted it. the key element for any piece is well thought out breakdown which causes a problem in it. i do love it though because i love all things narnia and lions.

well everything has been said. I do think the composition would be better if he were more to the right. His contrasting color would still make him the focal point of the image.

Love the sky and mountains...

The lion looks fantastic...
To me as a photographer ............
The lion has a hue around its body which seems to seperate it from the background a bit much..........

Hey I am trying and dying here.........

Its amazing you can do this from my perspective.......... 10+

Avatar Dax

Wonderful subject Glenn! Lions are always so fascinating!
The only thing maybe...I'd prefer a less centered composition....with the lion on the right, and the river more visible! Very nice in any case! :)

Avatar starqueen

 12/01/05 @102

I have a horrible time doing landscapes, lol but you seem to have a great time doing it! It looks great... To me, the transition from forestland to mountain is probably the hardest to do in landscapes but you did this very well!

You already know it's a centered composition so I'm not gonna go there, haha, you chose that, you stand by it. A crit would be that perhaps it lacks depth... something in the hues of colors don't suggest a space as vast as this actually is. Even the rock itself, seems flatter than it should be. Also, I love the suggestiveness of the background but you applied that to the rock in the foreground as well, which I think should be more distinct and "hard" if the lion is so exact. Also, I'm not a fan of the outline around the lion...

:) good work, I'm a bad member for not coming by your gallery more often, don't hate me :p +9

Avatar PeterGrave5

 12/16/05 @912

hey juro, here's my subjective criticism on the piece...

the center weight robs the eye path flow of the viewer from examining either left or right sides to much, in my absence i have been churning through photography books, and the thing that keeps popping up is the rule of thirds, draw imaginary lines vertically and horizontally across the image, dividing it into three rows and three columns, the places where the lines intersect are considered by the western mind (starting with observations by the greeks) to be the best area's to stick your main piece of each image. ofcourse this isn't 100% true, but i think its worth playing with....especially on "wide angle" pieces where your viewer is so far from the main object.

i think if the lion was down and to the right it would open up the area for the river, and release the eye to wander around soaking in the work you did on the sky and mountain tops.

This is very beautiful, the background is excelent, but the lion's pose looks kind of stiff. I also agree with what PeterGrave5 said.

I like it. I really do! But I'm thinking the mane should be somewhat thicker, specifically around the middle. Or even have more mane hanging down the chest area and touching his upper/middle torso. Then the neck area wouldn't appear too long and unnatural like it does now. And perhaps positioning the back legs to be more fitting with the lion might do you some good too. But hey, if that's your style, then ignore my mere opinion keep it up! I think it looks good either way and you've done some nice work!

Oh, this is VERY nice! I LOVE it! I think the only thing that could be touched up a little is the sky - maybe make the clouds have a more definite shape. You wouldn't have to detail them or anything, just define them a little more by refining the outlines etc.

But I LOVE the colours, I love the contrast of Aslan's coat against the backdrop. The lighting is fantastic!

Aslan looks sort of wrong. I don't know what it is exactly... I think that the hind legs look like they are from a different perspective... Anyway, nice painting!
