Description

Our Army marched north to meet Ryathas and his men in battle, there was no compromise in his eyes. Many young solders died here today and in my time I have killed many men as young as my sons.
Enough now, it's time for us to go home to our family, Hale, for I fear you are as weary as I. We have seen enough blood, and war has aged us...

deep description. anatomy is a bit off, rocks could use more textures, i love the wolf, the background and the guys face...very sad..

You dont appreciate the detail until you look at the enlargments. The detail in the dog is really good. I think this is a really nice image and i love the subject matter.

I reckon both the man and dog could use darker shading on them as they look slightly illuminated from the front.

Good to see more work from you Glenn.

Taintra: Hi, thanks for your comment, I was really careful on the anatomy on this one and even took a photo of myself for reference in that position. It's as accurate as it can be, the characters armour could be distorting things slighty.

Andy: Thanks for looking, it could be down to the monitor collab, the printout looks much darker. And good point please check the details!
Cheers guys.

Excellent Glenn,
I like the mood of the picture.
I also like the lighting.:)

Wow, that's really impressive. The textures are very nicely done, and the lightning is great as well. +9/9

Very nice Glen, The background and tree are superb. I think the man's face and hands need some work. They seem a bit flat to me. Perhaps a bit more color and shadowing in these areas would make him look more realistic.

Nice work!

I like the lighting you've chosen Glenn...Nice work on the tree and branches!
The expression of the man shows very well his sufference...
Nice work on the sword and armor!
The only thing maybe, the belly of the wolf seems to me just a bit too bright...
Nice job in any case! :)

Thank you all for your comments.
Michelle: I tried to keep the shades on the guys skin more basic to contrast with the worn armour and add to the mood. Not sure if it worked however :)

Dax: Agreed his belly is a little bright

Thanks for your help!

:) I like the overall concept, and the attitude of the man and dog
:) Good composition, especially the tree, although I'd have a little more space to the left and lean the sword a bit
:) Good job on the expression on the guy's face
:) The dog is excellent
:( His armour doesn't look right. I'd suggest going for more contrast, dark armour with specular bright highlights for the scrapes / dents. Look at Craig Mullins' battle pics for an idea of what I'm talking about.
:( The mountains look a bit pasted on. Try more variation in size and positioning, and try to blend them more with the scene.
:( And the most import thing last - the atmosphere. In the lower half you have great atmosphere with a real mood going on. But then you have that sky, which is technically OK but it's fierce and more suited to a battle scene than the calm after the storm, so to speak. To understand what I mean, I hope you don't mind me linking to this pic by Tracy Butler - http://www.epilogue.net/cgi/database/art/view.pl?id=45257 . This is probably my favourite piece of digital fantasy art. Not because of the technique, which is very good but not in any way amazing, but the staggeringly potent atmosphere she creates by always being aware of the mood she's trying to create and making sure every tiny detail, every dab of colour, fits that mood. (BTW - you may have to try the link a few times and wait a while cos the Epilogue server is notoriously reluctant to share its content with anybody)
+8/10

Thanks Simon, great points and thanks for the link. With the sky I was going for the sun breaking though the clouds as in the storm was raging during the battle. I guess I got the oppersite effect cheers mate!

The element that captures my attention is the aged look of the mans face. Very well done!! I agree the background could use a bit more detail but overall a good artwork.
Good to see a new work by you Glenn!

As always the colours are very good and I like the sky too. On the other hand, the perspective on the man, wolf and background dont fit. The man is too leaned towards, the dog on profile, and the background in-between. Also the sleeves of the armor look like a tile and dont have the proper shading.
Another note I would like to leave is that the picture is too stiff! For example, the sword is straight up, that just doesn’t look natural.
My suggestion to you is too loosen up and focus on the general picture and not on details.

Especially good work on the dog! However, WhiteShadow pointed out some of the main points ive thought of. It's very stiff, everything seems composed. In the bg you have the flag -a sign there's a very strong wind blowing, but neither the grass or fur seem to be affected by that.
It's a great painting. You have a good eye for details.

Very nice work Glenn! It's really full of details! Specialy on armour and on the wolf fur even if I agree with Sandra for the shadows on the wolf itself coz seems someway in "negative". maybe skin tones are a little strange and the bg mountains are placed in a 'toonish' way. However the mood is great and it's your typical style so ...why not i like that .

Avatar ARTOONATOR

 10/09/05 @891

The lighting doesn't match through the piece, espescially in contrasts, making the several elements look (Baron said it) pasted. Also, the horizon looks as if it's placed to high. Suck on my chocolate salty balls put 'm in your mouth and suck'm. Just checking if people actually read a comment. Other than that; Good going (thumbup)

Avatar Juro

 10/09/05 @939

Sandra: Good point on the grass

Nemo: Yeah the mountains do look a little toonish, agreed

Arnie: Some good pointers, the horizon can be any level it wants, just depends on the incline of the land. And your balls wouldn't be so brown and salty if you washed once in a while cheers mate.

Lots of good points and nice crits. Overall, this is a good piece and I just want to say that I think you really suceeded with the mood. The characters are wonderfuly expressive. Imo, thats one of the trickiest parts in the creative process. Well done.

Well I think this is your most ambitious work so far Glenn, that's for sure.

Check out how the Baron established a sense of atmospheric perspective here

See the desaturation and lacking contrast in the background? I think your mountains and horizon are a little sharp. That's one funky tree :p I think if you had maybe his helmet or a piece of equipment hanging on a branch, it would seem that the tree (lonely tree) belonged there, and not a matter of convience to fill up space in a painting (not that that was your intent...but how it kinda comes across).

The dog looks to have been scratched a few times....blood in the fur maybe??

I think the expression in the soldier is well portrayed, as is his posture...even the dog looks tired but loyal. (thumbup)

The tree texture and ground textures are awesome...I'm not going to crit anatomy or lighting cause it seems like the pros already chimed in on that...

*oh, and I'm still enjoying watching you and Arne trash each other :p

Very nice. The idea is quite sad but true. I like the details on the dog. Personally I think the figure is fine. Regardless of the conventional view on anatomy it's still a generalization as all people are not the same in proportion. It's ludicrous to become so anal about it all the time. This is art, not science.
The only thing that I didn't like was the stars because they look bland and too close, but that is just another opinion. You did a really nice job Glen (thumbup)

Avatar Juro

 10/11/05 @988

Hi Alterpha, thanks for your input, it spurs me on for the next one. The stars are actually snow drops which are ment to bring forward a feeling of stillness. Perhaps I should have put some in below ground level to make that more obvious. :)

hmm, i think i'm digging on how you support your moods through out the pieces, the shape of the tree, the color choices, all of it is working in concert together to bring this overwhelming sense of despair out of it, yes the autonomy could use work, yes it seems a bit flat, but i really think your overall reach is much more ambitious than lots of others on this site...when you reach what your after you'll be some where quite impressive +8

Mans face and skintones are great.
I'm fond of your dog!
Good tree design:)
The man pose is off.The perspective of his body is wrong
I like the field behind but the sky needs some more attention I think
Nice atmosphere, overall you succeeded to express the feeling but you need to work on perspective and proportions
PS.Thank you for commenting my Halloween picture. And I've aswered you there if you interested
